Picnic at hanging rock,

As early as the Jin dynasty, mandarin ducks were described as birds of loyalty and deep love. Mandarin ducks are never separated from each other. They fly together swim together, touch each other in the wings when perching, and have their necks crossed when sleeping. If a partner dies, the other will stay single the rest of his life. This devotion serves as a perfect illustration of what husband and wife should be like according to traditional Chinese value.

To enjoy one's life and take delight in what one does for a living originated from the works of Laozi. Laozi envisioned a society where the people were so contented with their lives, clothes, customs, and work that they had no communication at all with their neighboring state till death even though they were just a stone's throw away. The concept now mainly emphasizes the abundance of spiritual and material life in a peaceful society.

The dragon and the phoenix are the largest legendary animals in Chinese folklore. As the head of all living creatures, the dragon stands for authority and dignity and represents male supremacy. As the senior of all birds, the phoenix stands for beauty and love and represents female supremacy. Marriage is often described as an event of happy and fortunate combination of the dragon with the phoenix, a metaphor of sincere wishes for a good life. Ming dynasty records tell about the nine sons of the dragon: all had different capabilities. Images of the nine creatures are frequently used in architecture or utensils. All nine were born with extraordinary skills and each later fulfilled significant achievements.

“Bottle gourds" sound similar to "happiness and fortune" in Chinese while "vines on a plant"reads like "thousands of generations of offsprings"in Chinese pronunciation. Pomegranates bear a lot of seeds and bottle gourds have vines. They are both symbols of a large number of offsprings in images of happiness. Chinese roses or ever-green roses bloom all year round and have won such titles as queen of flowers. The idiom originates from a poem by Du Fu of the Tang dynasty. In the poem, he described the beauty of the spring season by focusing on the profoundly intoxicating scent of peach blossoms that are either pink, scarlet, or even fiery, displaying the unique liveliness of spring to its fullness, which implies a wish for the long-lasting beauty of spring on earth.
